How to export sleep data from Apple Health
Last updated 29 October 2026
Apple Health stores sleep as a series of periods, each with a start time, an end time and a stage. With an Apple Watch, the stages are Awake, REM, Core and Deep. Other apps and older watches may only record In Bed or Asleep.
Export sleep
- Open Vitalsnip, tap Data and pick Sleep (under Sleep).
- Choose the dates.
- Tap Show Data.
Sleep is exported reading by reading, because a daily average of stages doesn’t mean much. Each row has the stage, when it started and ended, and the device that recorded it.
Pick a format
- Markdown to ask an AI chat about your sleep, for example how late caffeine or a new bedtime affected your deep sleep.
- CSV to total each stage per night in a spreadsheet.
- JSON for your own scripts.
Why some nights look odd
- Two sources can record the same night, such as an Apple Watch and a sleep app. Each row shows its source, so you can filter.
- A night that starts before midnight belongs to the day it started on.
- Naps are recorded as sleep too.
