How to export Apple Health data from your iPhone

Last updated 29 October 2026

Apple Health keeps years of steps, heart rate, sleep and workouts, but it doesn’t show a simple “export this” button for one data type. There are two ways to get the data out.

Option 1: Apple’s full export

  1. Open the Health app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initials at the top right.
  3. Scroll down and tap Export All Health Data, then Export.
  4. Wait while it prepares the file, then save or share export.zip.

The zip holds export.xml, one file with every reading Health has ever stored, plus workout routes and ECG recordings. After a few years with an Apple Watch it’s often hundreds of megabytes. Spreadsheets struggle to open it, AI chats reject it as too large, and you have to dig the readings you want out of XML.

Use it when you want a complete backup or a developer tool that reads Apple’s format.

Option 2: export just what you need with Vitalsnip

  1. Open Vitalsnip and tap Data to pick one or more data types, such as Steps or Heart Rate.
  2. Choose the dates: the last 7, 30 or 90 days, or a custom range.
  3. Choose the detail: a daily summary, an hourly summary, or every reading with its time and the device that recorded it.
  4. Choose a format: Markdown for AI chats, CSV for spreadsheets, or JSON.
  5. Tap Show Data to check the charts and tables, then Copy or Share.

The first time you export a data type, iOS asks you to allow access to it. Vitalsnip only reads Health and never uploads anything: the file leaves your iPhone only when you share it.

The free version exports one data type over the last 7 days. Premium exports any dates and several types at once.
